Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen
After performing Juneteenth storytelling in 2017 at Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen’s Brainerd Institute Heritage summer program “Workshops in Open Fields” in Chester, SC. Dr. Ayers Allen, along with Open Fields Director Pete Stone, invited Author, Storyteller, & Edutainer Carlo L'Chelle Dawson into the historic home of this Renaissance woman, poet, cultural activist, & founder of Brainerd Institute Heritage. At that point, Carlo knew that she was called to share the unearthed story of this powerful woman, this hidden figure, whose poetry was literally read in outer space among the stars. With the wisdom of a sage, Dr. Ayers Allen shared the amazing story of her life as a renaissance woman, mother, poet, and Pulitzer Prize nominee.

Meet the Illustrator:
Caile Krislyn Dawson
Caile Krislyn Dawson was born to illustrate. From as young as 5 years old, she has illustrated people from observation. You will often find her giving the gift of art to family members, friends, and even those she meets along the way. She has honed her craft by attending art camps, arts classes, and the SC Governor’s School Art Academy. She even won “Most Artistic” in middle school and won various local art competitions. As a high school student, Caile participates in the National Art Honor Society, swim, Beta Club, Student Council, singing, and more. Caile's dream colleges are SCAD University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, or UNC-Asheville. Her future aspirations are to become a character designer, animator, illustrator, and graphic novelist while continuing to nurture animals and insects.
